Freedom Riders
The freedom riders were groups of people primarily African Americans, who rode buses in order to make an effort to desegregate the bus trips. Freedom riders also worked to desegregate areas with "white-only" areas.

March on Washington
The March on Washington was a protest march at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. The March was to bring attention to the challenges African Americans were facing with equality, specifically with working and jobs. During this time the iconic speech "I had a dream" by Martin Luther King was presented.

University of Alabama desegregated
Two African American students were allowed to enroll in the University of Alabama. Governor George Wallace surpassed the segregation laws in order to let the African American students enroll. -
JFK assasinated
John F. Kennedy was assassinated in November. He was assassinated in Dallas Texas. He was still the current president at the time. His presidency was soon passed on to Lydon B. Johnson from 1963-1969.

Anti-war protests began mostly on college campuses. Members of the Student for a Democratic Society orchestrated the events in order to try to make people realize the hardships of the war and what the government was sending their American troops into.

Hippie movement comes to place
In the mid to late 60s, the hippie movement worldwide began to spread. They promoted the ideas of love not war since the height of their rising was during the Vietnam war. Hippies had a more relaxed way of life and tried not to become involved with political drama.

Black Panther Party founded
The Black Panther Party was able to be mixed in with Anti-war protests. They believed that African Americans should not be drafted in the war only to de in the front lines. Members of the BPP also tried to help African Americans against police brutality. -
Moon Landing
The first men to land on the moon were Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. They were part of the Apollo 11 mission. The line "This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" became well known as Armstrong took his first steps on the moon.

A break-in with five men at the Democratic National Committee headquarters caused a major political scandal. President Nixon was later found to be involved in the attempted robbery and he resigned his Presidency in efforts to cover up that he was involved.

AIDS epidemic begins to rise
AIDS and HIV we're rapidly on the rise. In the early years, scientists were unable to identify the disease and where the origin came from. Later on, it became known as the gay man's disease since one of the first reported cases was someone who was homosexual. There was no cure, so many people who had the disease unfortunately died.
