John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown led a small army of 18 men to Harper's Ferry, Virginia. He was planning to instigate a major slave rebellion in the south but was trialed for treason and sentenced to be hanged on December 2nd. -

Secession of the Southern States
11 states secceded in all creating the Confederate States of America (CSA). When Virginia, one of the last states decided that they were pro-slavery, some people in the state decided against that and that's how West Virginia became a state.
