Mad formally changes from a comic to a magazine. In doing so, it is exempt from the CCA, and avoids much public scrutiny. This despite being much more crude and "blue" than any comics published before or under the CCA -
Comics driven underground
Early underground comics defy the CCA with a vengeance, but both purveyors and purchasers were vulnerable to criminal prosecution. Some were brave enough to sell on the street, usually out of baby carriages. -
Zap Comics
Zap was the pinnacle of the underground comics movement. Irreverent, and individualistic, it spoke to 60's counterculture opinions on class, gender and sexuality. -
The Zap Case
Zap Comics are taken to court for obcenity. The defense calls several mainstream comics writers, and Zap is acquitted of all charges.
