In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the United States President. The southern states did not want him elected because he wanted to end slavery. The southern states threatened to create the Confederate Army if he was elected. Once he was elected he had no choice but to declare war. -

The south attacks Fort Sumter which starts the war between the northern and southern states. -

President Lincoln issues an executive order to free many slaves. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The north wins this battle and begins to win the war. -
General Robert E. Lee surrenders.
General Lee, leader of the confederate Army surrenders to General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. This officially ends the Civil War. -
President Lincoln Assassinated
While at the Ford's theater, President Lincoln is shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth.
