  • 13th amendment

    granted citizenship and equal civil legal rights to African Americans, who had been emancipated after the American Civil War.
  • 15th amendment

    15th amendment
    prohibited the federal government in each state from denying any citizens right to vote.
  • Plessy v Feguson

    Plessy v Feguson
    African American man, Homer Plessy refused to sit in the car for blacks while riding on the train. US Supreme court upheld the doctrine.
  • The NAACP

    The NAACP
    Founded by a group of African Americans. Goal was to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality to eliminate discrimination.
  • 19th amendment

    19th amendment
    gave women the right to vote."The right of citizens of the US to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States..."
  • Executive Order 9981

    Executive Order 9981
    Abolished all discrimination nation against people on the basis of race, color, religion or origin in the Armed forces, issued by President Truman. Led to the end of segregation in all military services.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Racial Segregation held at school was ruled as a violation of the 114th amendment to the constitution
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Political and social protest against racism in the public transit system in Montgomery. Many African Americans were arrested for not moving.
  • SLCC Founded

    SLCC Founded
    An African American Civil Rights organization which was set to get rid of segregation and promote the goals of social equality
  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine
    After schools became integrated, nine African Americans enrolled in Little Rock High School. Lead to the Little Rock Crisis, where African Americans were militarily prohibited from entering the school.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1957

    The first Civil Rights legislation passed by the Supreme Court. Established civil rights section of Justice and empowered federal prosecutors to obtain interference with the right to vote
  • SNCC Founded

    SNCC Founded
    Founded by the African American people, the SNCC. Gave younger African Americans more freedom from segregation.
  • Freedom Riders

    Civil Rights Activist that rode interstate buses into segregated Southern US States to challenge the supreme court,

    Prohibits conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of poll taxes.
