    He was a prominent union leader and labor organizer who joined the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California. Later they became the United Farm Workers. He founded the organization in 1962.

    This Native American grassroots movement was initially formed to address issues of poverty and police brutality against Native Americans. This group formed in the Civil Rights movement eventually encompassed the entire Indian spectrum demands - economic, independence, culture, and order.
