13th Amendment* (* = African Americans)
This amendment formally abolished slavery in the United States when it was passed. This amendment was apart of the Constitutional Issues and Laws category. -
14th Amendment
This amendment has become one of the most used amendments in the court to date regarding equal protection of citizens. It is categorized with Constitutional Issues and Laws and states; rights of citizenship, due process of law, and equal protection of the law. -
15th Amendment*
Passed by Congress on February 16th, and ratified on the 3rd a year later. This amendment gave African Americans males the right to vote. This amendment like the two before it falls into the Constitutional Issues and Laws category. -
Tuskegee Institute*
This institution gave teachers in Alabama both academic and vocational training, so they could learn how to fly. It was founded by Booker T. Washington. This was one of the events of the civil rights. -
Plessy v. Ferguson*
This landmark Supreme Court case's verdict was declaring separate-but-equal facilities constitutional on intrastate railroads. This decision upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation. This court case was in the Constitutional Issues and Law category. -
NAACP*
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was created in response to the ongoing violence against African Americans around the country. It was meant to secure equality of rights for African Americans and eliminate race - based discrimination. This was a group in the Civil Rights events. -
19th Amendment ~ (~ = women)
This amendment gave women the right to vote meaning all American women. This was seen as apart of the Constitutional Issues and Laws category. -
Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
First proposed by the National Women's political party designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex. It seeks to end legal distinctions between men and women in matters of divorce, property, and employment. This would be categorized as a Constitutional Law. -
Executive Order 9981*
Known as one of the Constitutional Issues and Laws. This executive order was signed by President Truman intended to abolish racial segregation in the U.S. military. It allowed for African Americans to play an important role in the armed forces helping out the U.S. military. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This Supreme Court case achieved racial equality in public schools. This was a landmark case because the justices ruled unanimously that segregation in school was unconstitutional. The event was categorized in Constitutional Issues and Laws file. -
SNCC*
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, one the famous groups created during the Civil Rights timeline. This group gave younger blacks a voice in the civil rights movement. Which became one of the movement's more radical branches that was founded by Ella Baker. -
Chicano Movement (Mural Movement)- (- = chicano)
This movement began with artists using the walls of the city buildings, housing projects, schools, and churches to depict Mexican American culture. It was one of the many groups in the civil rights movement. -
Freedom Riders
This group were civil rights activists who rode buses into the segregated south to challenge the US Supreme Court decisions of Morgan v Virginia. Which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. -
Cesar Chavez^ (^ = Mexican Americans)
He was a prominent union leader and labor organizer who joined the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California. Later they became the United Farm Workers. He founded the organization in 1962. -
24th Amendment
This amendment prohibited any poll tax in elections for federal officials. Since some time ago citizens had to pay a fee to vote in national elections, this law canceled that out. It was in the Constitutional Issue and Law category from the Civil Rights events. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This civil rights and labor law in the US outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. It helped in schools, employment, and public accommodations. This was one of the last Constitutional Issues and Laws passed in the Civil Rights. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965*
Lyndon B. Johnson aimed to overcome legal barriers that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote (guaranteed under the 15th amendment) This was the last Constitutional Issue and Laws event in the Civil Rights movement. -
Black Panthers*
The was a revolutionary political organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in California. The ideology was of black nationalism, socialism, and armed self - defense. This group was revolutionary in the Civil Rights movement. -
American Indian Movement (AIM)+ (+ = Native Americans)
This Native American grassroots movement was initially formed to address issues of poverty and police brutality against Native Americans. This group formed in the Civil Rights movement eventually encompassed the entire Indian spectrum demands - economic, independence, culture, and order. -
MLK assassinated
Martin Luther King JR. was an American activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights movement until he was assassinated by firearm. He was a super important historic figure in this time frame.
