Containment Policy
A United States policy to prevent the spread of communism by using differnet strategies. This policy was a response to the moves made by the Soviets and their attempts to increase their communist influence in Europe, China, Korea, and VIetnam. -
Truman Doctrine
US would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them being overtaken by the Soviets. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was when the US gave money to Europe to help them reconstruct their economies after WWII -
Berlin Airlift/ Berlin Blockade
This was when the Soviet Union blocked the Allie's railways, roads and canals that gave them access to the Allied section of Berlin. It was one of the first international crses of the cold war. The US had to develop ways to transport goods through the air to that part of Germany. -
NATO
This was an organization based on an agreement to support a member state defensivly if there is an external attack (intergovernmental military alliance). -

Soviet Atomic Bomb
The Soivet Union exploded its first atomic bomb. It supprised the US because they were not expecting the Soviets to have such nucelar knowlege so soon. -
Alger Hiss
As an American lawyer, governent official, author, and lecturer, Alger Hiss was accused in 1948 of being a Soviet spy even though he was involved in the establishment of the United Nations. He was convicted of perjury in 1950. -
Korean War
When the noncommunist part of Korea (Republic of Korea, supported by USA) vs. communist part of Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea supported by China and Russians). -
Rosenburg's
These were American communists who were accused for conspiracy of being spies for the Soviet Union during the cold war. They were convicted and executed on this date. Their charges were passing information about the atomic bomb to Soviets. This was the first execution of civilians for espionage in United States History. -

McCarthy Hearings
These were a series of hearings held by the United States Senate's Subcommitee on Investigations. The purpose of the hearings wre to investigate the disagreeing accusations between the US Army and Senator Joseph McCarthy. -
Warsaw Pact
"Warsaw Treaty Organization of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assitance" was a mutual defense treaty that involved eight communist states in Eastern Europe during the cold war. -
Vietnam War
The United States wanted to prevent communist takeover of South Vietnam. Followed the first Indochina war. Guierilla warfare. -
Berlin Wal Built
The Berlin wall cut off West Berlin from surrounding Germany, and other parts of Berlin. This was put in place to supposidly protect East Berlin from "Nazi Germans" in West Berlin. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
US had tried to overthrow some Cuban government so in fall of 1962, Soviets and Cuban secretly began building missile bases in Cuba, with missiles aimed at the continnental United States. USA blockaded Cuba, and demanded that the bases be dismantled. Entually, the Soviets dimantled them (only because the US secrety agreeed to dismantle THEIR missiles in Italy). -

Decreased the number of "warheads" in both USA and Soviet Union. -

Ronald Reagan
American presidant that ordered massive buildups of the Armed Forces, provided aid to anti-communist governments in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He also deployed people to Afghanistan, and ended the communist rule there. -
Mikhail Gorbachev
Wanted US and Soviets to cut nuclear weapon load in half. He started drawing troops out of Afghanistan and Mongolia. He allowed Eastern Europe to control their own internal affairs, which caused multiple upheavals of communsit rule. -
