US Tried to Buy Land (Polk and Slidell)
Polk sends Slidell to Mexico to try and buy New Mexico and California. The Mexican got ahold of the news and spread it and callled President Herra of mexico a traitor. Herrera did not meet with Slidell. -
US Troops Stationed At Disputed Border
General Taylors troops march south past the Nueces River and make it to disputed border. -
US Declares War
Taylor sends Polk a letter asking permission to declare war on Mexico. Congress approved and Polk hoped that this would intimidate Mexico into giving up Texas. -
Battle of Monterrey
Taylors troops invade city of Monterrey and they defeat the forces of General Pedro de Ampudia. Stories of Taylors success helped gain recruits back in the US. -
Mexico Surrendered
US troops invade Mexico city. Mexico surrenders and America wins the war. -
Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
Negotiators sign the treaty and it is immediatly rushed to Washington. The treaty says that the US pays Mexico 15 million dollars for California, New Mexico, and maintain the border ofnTexas and Rio Grande.
