  • the British gain control of cape colony in south Africa from the dutch

    The British returned the colony to the dutch government in 1803 after having seized the Cape from the VOC in 1795.

    The opium wars consisted of two Conflicts in China between the forces western countries and from the Qing dynasty. The first war occurred in 1839 ending in 1842. the second opium war occurred in 1856 ending in 1860. The foreign powers were victorious and gain commercial privileges and legal and territorial concessions in China.

    occurred August 29, 1842 . this treaty ended in the first opium war. China created unequal treaties which decrease China sovereignty

    The canal opened November 17, 1869. Ferdinand de lesseps failed to build. A canal across the isthmus in panama when it opened the sues canal was only 25 feet deep. The Suez Canal is a man-made waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean via the Red Sea. It enables a more direct route for shipping between Europe and Asia, effectively allowing for passage from the North Atlantic to the Indian Ocean without having to circumnavigate the African continent.

Franco-German War, also called Franco-Prussian War, (July 19, 1870–May 10, 1871), war in which a coalition of German states led by Prussia defeated France. The war marked the end of French hegemony in continental Europe and resulted in the creation of a unified Germany.
  • Otto von Bismarck becomes chancellor

    Founder and first chancellor of the German Empire in 1871 until 1890. Germany became a modern, unified nation under the leadership of the “Iron Chancellor” Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898), who between 1862 and 1890 effectively ruled first Prussia and then all of Germany.
