Elementary and Secondary Education Act
First federal grant program to fund the education of children with disabilities in state-operated or state-supported schools -
Fair Housing Act
Makes it unlawful to refuse to sell/rent or negotiate with an individual due to race, sex, gender, or disability. -
Rehabilitation Act
This was to help with the societal barriers that people with disabilities faced. Section 503 says people cannot be discriminated in employment. Title VII provided them services for independent living. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
Free appropriate public education is available, along with mandated IEPs for students with disabilities. -
Civil Service Reform Act
Contains rules and regulations to promote fairness in the workplace and prohibits discrimination to individuals with disabilities. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
Prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in school, jobs, transportation and other public areas. -
IDEA
Provides Free Appropriate Public Education to students with disabilities. -
NCLB
This requires all schools to test all students, including the ones with IEPs and 504 plans. The assessments must be matched up to standards based on grade level. This also allows accommodations for those with special needs while testing to measure the students knowledge instead of their disability.
