Male hummers arrive first
March 25, 2007, was the earliest date for a reported Ruby-throated Hummingbird near St Louis. According to data collected over the last 10 years, April 8 is the average date, and April 10 is the mode. In 2009, the first bird was reported on April 15. Only adult males have a ruby throat, visible only when the light is right. -

This a a Snowberry Clearwing Moth. It feeds on nectar, and is often mistaken for a baby hummingbird. Actually, it's trying to mimic a bumblebee with its coloration. By the time we see immature hummingbirds, they look like adult females. -
