The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. A Serbian-nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand sent groups to assassinate the Archduke.

Russia's response

Russia deploys its army to intervene against Austria-Hungary in favor of its ally, Serbia. This move starts a chain reaction that leads to the deployment of the rest of the European Powers. inevitably that leads to nations being hostile towards one another.
