    The world’s first food bank, St. Mary's Food Bank, was founded by John van Hengel in Arizona. After volunteering in a soup kitchen, van Hengel came up with the idea of people depositing food, while others in need could withdraw it.

  • World Food Conference

    World Food Conference
    There were 500 million hungry people accounted for in the world. This year, the World Food Conference pledges to eradicate child hunger in 10 years.
  • The World Food Summit

    The World Food Summit
    830 million hungry people in the world. The World Food Conference pledge was not successful. The World Food Summit pledges to reduce the number of hungry people by half by the year 2015.

    12% of the U.S. population is hungry. The U.S. Farm Bill increases food nutrition programs, like Food Stamps, Women and Children in need. Also, food banks use local and industry-donated food to add to donations of government surplus.

    There are 862 million hungry people in the world. The FAO holds a conference on World Food Security called High-Level Conference. They announce that instead of reducing the ranks of the hungry to 400 million, hunger has increased. Over three billion people live on less than $2 a day. The UN developed a website called Free Rice, a vocabulary game. For points tallied, sponsors donate money to world hunger.

    12% of the U.S. population is still hungry
    $60 billion are annually put in government food nutrition programs and there are over 50,000 food banks and food pantries across the nation, one in six children in the U.S. go hungry each month and 35 million people do not meet minimum daily caloric requirements.
