Armed proslavery people attacked Kansas to have slavery there. Kansas became free after a bloody civil war. -
Lincoln / Douglas Debates
Lincoln and Douglas were debating for a spot in the Senate for Illinois. Both did not like slavery but had different views of it. Douglas thought it was up to the state to decide whether or not to have slavery. Lincoln thought that the government could not abolish slavery all together. -

John Brown attacked a federal arsenal to rally slaves to fight and run away. His plan failed and he was captured, tried and executed. -
Lincoln's Election
Lincoln got 180 out of 303 votes. He won all of the northern states votes. Lincoln was not even on the ballets in the south. -
South Carolina secedes
South Carolina held a special meeting and voted to secede. Ohter southern states followed and created the Confederate States of America.
