  • Pre-colonial America:Native Americans

    Pre-colonial America:Native Americans
Informal education passed on traditions and skills to succeed.
I feel this is an important event because, even before teachers and school, educating was very important, many parents taught their children to survive by understanding the skills and learning how to make cook, make clothing, gather food, make a home, etc.

    Education Timeline

  • Colonial America

    Colonial America
Settlements of Jamestown, Plymouth, Providence, etc. brought European school philosophies and materials. 1607-1636 I consider this an important event because this is where the first steps took place for the education system in America.
  • Colonial America: Mass.

    Colonial America: Mass.
Law of 1642 -- parents and "masters" held accountable by law to make sure children are educated. I feel this event is important because it's very important for children to be in school, and even in the past they made sure of that as well.
  • Colonial America

    Colonial America
Teacher Training: 1) white indentured servants bought passage to America agreeing to work as teachers to
pay the debt, 2) apprenticeships -- studied under a schoolmaster for 10 years to become a schoolmaster.
This event is important due to the fact that this is where "Teachers" emerge and student teaching comes into play.
  • Pennsylvania: Benjamin Franklin

    Pennsylvania: Benjamin Franklin
Establishes American Academy; first academy in the US; to create skilled workers; taught kids who weren't
being educated in college prep schools; private schools; admitted girls; trained teachers.
This is an important event because girls get the same education as boys. It may have taken some years but during this time they finally get to go to school.
  • USA: George Bell, NicholasFranklin, & Moses Liverpool

USA: George Bell, NicholasFranklin, & Moses Liverpool
Free African Americans who established the first Black school house in Washington, DC.
This event is important because African Americans got the opportunity to read and write, and it's a stepping stone in that part of history as well.
  • Massachusetts

    Massachusetts
First American high school formed, 3-yr courses in English, math, science, history, philosophy, chemistry, logic,
French, US Constitution; public schooling vs. the private Latin Grammar Schools.
This event is important because back then teenagers got the opportunity to learn more after the primary levels of learning.
  • Connecticut: PrudenceCrandall

    Connecticut: PrudenceCrandall
Forms Quaker boarding school; admits African American girls; white parents withdraw their children; state
legislature tries to outlaw educating Blacks out of state; jailed and tried, but no final court decision reached.
I feel this is one of the first movements to equal rights in the country, and it must've been a great gamble but children and education were important.
  • Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania
First of 26 Indian boarding schools established to assimilate Native American children into the mainstream
culture; the schools leave a controversial legacy.
I'm Native American, so I can say that this is an important event, not only did boarding schools westernize Native Americans but it also had some benefits in the long run. In today's world education is important and it's a must to learn to speak, read and write English.
  • USA

    USA
32 states by this time had passed compulsory elementary school attendance laws.
This is important, young children need to be in schools, instead of working.Schools provide the children an opportunity to be a kid.
  • California & Ohio 1909-1910

    California & Ohio 1909-1910
First junior high schools established at Berkeley and Columbus to bridge gaps between elementary and college
    prep/skilled labor.
Junior high/Middle school is where adolescents prep for high school, so they know what to expect. An important stepping stone of a child's life.
  • USA - 1920s - 1930s

    USA - 1920s - 1930s
Major population increase = need for more teachers; teacher ed programs expanded to 3-4 years; state
teachers' colleges began awarding baccalaureate degrees, added secondary education to teacher training.
I feel this is important due to the fact that if college students are in the teaching field, more experience and education is needed to be better prepared for the classroom.
  • USA - 1940-present

    USA - 1940-present
More private schools; home-schooling movement; charter schools; continuing/adult education programs.
Now a days, more parents are putting their child(ren) in one of the three settings and it's a common thing, public schools are not the only schools anymore. And teachers can have the opportunity to have more education as well, to improve their skills and learn new ones as well.
  • USA-mid 1900s -present

    USA-mid 1900s -present
More teaching tools developed -- audiovisual, learning games, beautifully illustrated books, instructional TV,
computers; due to influence of Pestalozzi, Dewey, etc. (children learn by firsthand experiences).
This event is important to me because teaching tools give a child a much broader outlook on learning.
  • USA - Congress

    USA - Congress
    Elementary and Secondary Education Act Congress passes providing more federal funds for public schools;
    Higher Education Act also passes.
More funds, means more teaching tools and a chance to focus on the child's needs, that's why this event is important to me.
  • USA Congress

    USA Congress
Education for Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142) requires local districts to provide education for
children with special needs, children in special ed programs increased from 310,000 to 4,641,000.
This event is important, all children have the right to learn, no matter what their state is.
  • USA Congress

    USA Congress
Public Law 98-377 passes; added new science and mathematics programs, magnet schools (themed schools
that draw diverse groups across a school district), and equal access to public schools.
Now a days it's important for everyone to know math and science, and providing students with the programs to enhance their knowledge in the subject areas is indeed a smart choice.
  • USA: Supreme Court

    USA: Supreme Court
Rules that officially sanctioned prayers or invocations at public school events are unconstitutional.
This event is important because not everyone in the U.S are religious, or they may be of another religion.
  • California

    California
Proposition 227 passes requiring all school instruction to be in English.
This event is important because English is the langauage that is mostly spoken in the U.S.
  • Alabama

    Alabama
First state to require public schools to check the immigration status of students; however, undocumented
    children are not denied admission.
This event is an important part of history, as times change this became a controversy in the media, and it still is today. Many parents want their children to be educated.
