Brought on accident by Dutch and sold to Virginians. This would eventually lead to the Civil War. -
The Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney patented the Cotton Gin, revolutionizing the prodution of cotton by increasing the speed of seed removal. This expanded the demand for slaves and made cotton King of the south. Thus leading to the Civil War. -
Missouri Compromise
In 1820, the Missouri Compromise, submitted by Henry Clay, proposed that Missouri enter the United States as a slave state and Maine enter as a free state to avoid inbalance of power in the Senate. This caused the Civil War because it showed how serious the issue of slavery was. -
The Mexican-American War Ends
New land was aquired from Mexico, which lead to the debate of whether new territories would be free or not, ultimatly leading to the Civil War. -
Cafifornia Statehood
California was amitted to the United States as a free state. This would create inblance in the Senate whisch would result into the manifestation of popular sovereignty for other territories, creating conflict and moreover, the Civil War. -
Fugitive Slave Law
This las forcibly compelled citizens to assit in the capture of runaway slaves. This angered Northern sates, making them feel apart of the slave sytem, in which the majority despised, leading to the Civil War. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin exposing the cruelties and despair that slaves face. It opened the eyes of many Northerners and changed their ideas on slavery intensifing the debate, which led to the Civil War. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
A proposal to split Nebraska into Kansas and Nebraska. Settlers would decide by popular sovereignty whether it would be a slave or free state. This resulted into pro slavery and anti slavery supporters rushing to cast their votes. Which leads to the Civil War. -
Bloody Kansas
The Sack of Lawrence and Massacre of Pottawatomie set off a brutal guerrilla war in Kansas. By the end of 1856, over 200 people would be killed in cold blood. No compromise would be made, and showing that both sides were willing to fight, causing the inevitable Civil War. -
Dred Scott Decision
Ruled that Scott was black and not a citizen therefore he had no right to sue for his freedom. This decision also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, which led to the Civil War.
