Declared by United Nations
Representatives of 26 Allied nations fighting against the Axis Powers met in Washington, D.C. to pledge their support for the Atlantic Charter by signing the "Declaration by United Nations". President Roosevelt suggested for this document to contain the first official use of the term "United Nations". -
Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine formed by President Harry S. Truman. He declared it to be the foreign policy of the United States to assist any country whose stability was threatened by communism. -
United Nations
General Assembly adopts the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This internation document is a document that states basic rights and major freedoms that all human beings are entitled to. -
NATO created
The United States, Canada and 10 West European states signed the Washington Treaty to create the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Article 5 says; "The parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North American shall be considered an attack against them all..." -
NATO rejects Warsaw Pact proposal
NATO rejected the Warsaw Pact proposals to renounce first use of nuclear arms and restrict membership. The Warsaw Pact proposal allowed for the creation of a unified military command similar to NATO. -
United Nations
The United Nations is created as its Charter is ratified by the five permanent members of the Security Council and the majority of other participants, and comes into force. It was signed at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center in San Francisco, United States by 50 of the 51 original member countries.
