Fugitive Slave Act
Required all citizens to help catch African American trying to escape slavery people were fined 1,000$ and put in jail if they let them go and 5-10$ if judges turned the slaves in. Some Judges would take free African Americans and turn them in just to get money. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Stephan Douglas proposed his large region should be decided into two territories, Kansas and Nebraska. They hoped in time Kansas would become a slave state. Argument over slavery was leading the civil war closer. Missouri Compromise had banned slavery in kansas and Nebraska. -
Compromise of 1850
Allowed California to enter the union as a free state divided New Mexico and Utah into territories. Stephan Douglas confirmed it. -
Dred Scott Case
Scott was a slave that moved to a free state but the court said that he was still a slave so they did not let Scott file a lawsuit. It was saying that slavery was legal in all territories. -

Harriet Beecher wrote about how wrong doing of slavery. She writes it about a slave Uncle Tom that gets killed for not telling where the two runaways where. The story changed many points of views for the southerners. -
Election of 1860
In Charles town they had a convention it was a democratic party. Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860 in a 4 way contest, Stephen Douglas was a democrat, John Breckinridge was a Southern democrat, and John Bell was Constitutional Union. -

John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown led a group of anti slavery with 5 African Americans that planned to raid a gun warehouse. John got a death sentence but showed no fear. He had poems and songs written about him and it was very important.
