The war was a big deal because both sides had the power to destroy the world with one bomb.

    The Berlin Blockade was the first big international problem during the Cold War, The Soviet Union blocked all the roadways, railroad and canals into Berlin. The goal of this was to limit France, Great Britain and the United States access to their bases. In response to the blockade the Berlin Airlift was created. The blockade was big deal because it was the first conflict during the war which foreshadowed the upcoming conflict with Berlin.

    General MacArthur created strategies and military actions during the Korean War which helped save South Korea from falling to the force of the communist in the north. MacArthur asked permission from Truman to bomb the communist in China, but Truman did not approve of the offer. President Truman fired MacArthur after declining the request and soon replaced him with Gen. Matthew Ridgeway. This was a big deal because it was the most famous firing in civilian-military conflict.

    Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Union of Soviet Socialists Republics. Once he came into power he ruled with an iron fist. At 73 years old Stalin died from a cerebral hemorrhage. In response to Joseph Stalin passing away his minister of internal affairs was shot for treason. Large crowed gathered in the streets of Moscow and mourned over their loss.

    The Geneva Conference was an effort to resolve problems in Asia. Representatives from the Soviet Union, the United States, The People's Republic of China, France and Great Britain, came together to discuss the problems in Asia. The conference came to an agreement that France would withdraw their troops out of Vietnam, and Vietnam would be divided at the 17th parallel until the next election. The Geneva Conference was the turning point in the involvement in Vietnam for the U.S.

    The Suez Canal Crisis began in 1956 when Gamal A. Nasser of Egypt to nationalize the Suez Canal, which was previously owned by Great Britain.

The reason for the satellite being launched was to beat the United States into space. In response to the launch the United States worked to build their satellite and launched it. This was a big deal because it was the first satellite to be successfully launched into space.

    The Soviet Union shot down the United States U-2 spy plane and captured its pilot. Once the pilot was capture the U.S was forced to admit that the CIA had been flying spy planes in Soviet airspace for several years. In response to the spy plane being shot down, it cause an important meeting that was suppose to happen between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to be derailed. This was important because it raised tensions during the Cold War.

    The Bay of Pigs was the unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba, the goal was to take down the communist government of Fidel Castro. As a result of this failure President Kennedy lost the trust of the intelligence services and the Soviet Union and Cuba's relationship got stronger. This also triggered a stand off between the Soviet Union and the United States. This was a big deal because it prompted the Cuban missile crisis.

After President Kennedy addressed Americans about his idea of enacting a naval blockade around Cuba. In response to this news many people were afraid that the world was going into a nuclear war. This was avoided when the Soviet Union leader and Kennedy came to an agreement that the missiles would be removed. This was a big deal because it was the closet the world became to a nuclear war.
