  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri requested to join the union as a slave state which would offset the amount of slave states relative to that of the free ones. In response, Congress constructed a contract that allowed for Missouri to be a slave state while also admitting Maine as a free state in attempt to balance the power. An invisible line was then drawn across the Louisiana Territory that clearly separated the slave states from the free ones. This solution only temporarily solved a problem that would arise again.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Congressional propsal that attempted to hinder the Republican Party by prohibiting the expansion of slavery into the new western territories. An man named David Wilmot suggested an amendment to a bill that would not allow any slavery in the new territories. This bill was never passed by congress and this attempt resulted in increased tensions between the Republican and Democratic parties.

    Mexican American War

    Texas became independent from Mexico in 1836 and the southern part of the U.S. wanted to annex it into America while the northern part did not. Mexio was also against annexation and threatened war if America tried to gain Texas. Polk who was electedsupported the annexation of Texas and other western territories. When the U.S. army went to acquire the territories, the Mexican army attacked and killed American soliders, essentially starting the war which was basically over western territories.
  • Compromise of 1850

    An attempted resolution between the North and the South where California was admitted to the U.S. as a free state which allowed for Utah and New Mexico to be determined free or not by popular sovereignty.
