Remember The Alamo
With the Mexican army approaching Commander of the army Sam Houston ordered Colonel Neil to abandon the Alamo. Colonel Neil refused and decided that his force of 150 men including frontier hero's David Bowie, and Davy Crocket. who defend the Alamo against Santa Anna's force of almost 2000. Santa Ana forces besieged the Alamo for two weeks until the the last stand on Mach 6th. The death of the 183 defenders of the Alamo created the spark Texas needed to fight for its freedom.(131, Campbell) -
Fort Goliad Massacre
Colonel James w. Fannin and his men were caught by the Mexican army retreating from the Fort of Goliad. Stuck in the middle of an open plain with no way to defend themselves they surrendered. Santa Ana reinforced is policy of taking no poisoners and ordered the captured men to be executed. On that day 300 to 400 Texans lost their lives. this massacre left Sam Houston's troops the last military force defending Texas from Santa Ana.(136,Campbell) -
The Battle San Jacinto
With Houston's army on retreat North to Nacogdoches Santa Ana decided to cross the Brazos River with a fraction of his men to capture the Texas government at Harrison. What he did not account for was Sam Houston seizing the opportunity to attack Santa Annas weakened force. Houston set up his men at the San Jacinto River for what would be Texas's last chance to defeat Santa Ana. Houston took the Mexican army by surprise in an overwhelming victory with only two casualties, and Santa Ana capture. -
The Treaty of Velasco
The treaty of Velasco signed by the captured Santa Ana brought an end to the war. It also called for the withdrawal of the Mexican army from Texas as well as a promise from Santa Ana to promote Texas Independence to the Mexican government.(144, Campbell) -
The Republic Of Texas
On September 5th 1846 three crucial events transpired that would lay the ground to make Texas as we know it today. Sam Houston became the first President of the Republic of Texas. Congress passed a constitution. Voters overwhelmingly supported annexation to the United States.(145, Campbell) -
The Lamar Administration
Creating a new country is difficult and by the end of Houston's first term the political parties were Houston supporters and Houston haters. Mirabeau B. Lamar won the presidency on the promise of reversing Houston's Policies. Specifically Lamer wanted to take a harder stance the Indians and Mexico than Houston did.(153, Campbell) -
Council House Fight
After increased Indian raids Indian chiefs meet with Texas commissioners in a court room to negotiate the exchange of prisoners. Negotiations were short and high tensions lead to fight were all the Indians were either captured or killed.(154, Campbell) -
Houston's Second Term
After the Lamar administration failed to deliver on its promises Sam Houston once again became President. Houston started his presidency by improving treatment of the Indians, lessoning the growth of Texas's debt, trying to ease tensions with Mexico, and gaining support for annexation.(158, Campbell) -
Armistice with Mexico
After years of conflict Sam Houston along with his allies in London managed to sign an armistice with Mexico. -
Failed Annexation
The first treaty of annexation between the United States and Texas failed when it became an issue on the campaign trail for President of the United States. This treaty was defeated in congress 35 to 16.(167, Campbell) -
The Annexation of Texas
After the first failed attempt a new deal for annexation was made that had more favorable conditions for the United States. Texas accepted the resolution officially making Texas a state. In 1846 Texas created a new state Government with James Pickney Henderson as the new Governor.(168, Campbell)
