Ferdinand's Assassination
On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, were assassinated while visiting Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. The Ferdinand's were shot by Gavrilo Princip a member of the Black Hand (A secret scoiety commited to ridding Bosnia of Austrian rule). -
Battle of the Austrian Border
On July 28, 1914, Austria had declined Serbia's offer which had then started The Great War. Russian leaders then made the order of mobilization of troops to the Austrian border. -

The Schieffen
Germany put a battle plan into play. General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen is what the plan was named after. Schlieffen called to attack France and Russia knowing that Russia would have a hard time mobilizing its troops. The Schlieffen plan ordered troopsto go far west and fight France then east to fight Russia. -

Battle of the German-Russian Border
This Eastern Front battle developed on the German- Russia border. Russians and Serbs battled against Germans, Austrians, and Turks. This Eastern Front War was more mobile than in the west yet slaughter and stalemate were common. -
Battle of Paris
On September 5, 1914 the Allies (Great Britain, France, and Russia) attacked the Germans, northeast part of Paris. German soldiers were rushed by taxicabs but after eight days of battling the Germans had been pushed back around 60 miles. -

Battle of Gallipoli
In February 1915, The Allies wanted to end the stalemate, they would do this by taking the Dardanelles strait. This battle would e known as the Gallipoli campaign. By May, Gallipoli had turned into another stalemate, both side fought from trenches in which they both had dug. -

The Germans had a massive attack against the French. Both sides lost at least 300, 000 men if not more. -

Battle of the Valley of Somme River
The British army tried helping out the French by attacking the Germans northwest of Verdun. On the very first day more than 20, 000 British soldiers were killed. By then end, each side had suffered over half a million casualties. -

Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
This plan/war plan was a ppolicy where the Germans would sink any ship in the waters of Britain with submarines. After killing many people including U.S. Citizens and President Woodrow WIlson protesting, Germany finally agreed to stop attacking neutral and passenger ships. -
U.S.A. joins the Allies
After recieving a decoded note of Germany taking back land from America, the President declared war on April 2, 1917 with the help of the Allies.
