Sputnik The Soviet Union launched the first man-made satellite in October of 1957 bu the U.S.S.R. It was only a little but larger than the size of a basketball and weighted 184 pounds. It had no scientific equiptment attached to it but it did orbit the earth ever 98 minutes. This creation is what initiated the space race. -

Cuba taken over Fidel Castro established the very first communist state in the Western Hemisphere after he overthrew the miitary dictatorshio of Fugencio Batista. Fidel ruled Cuba fro about five decades until his brother took over in 2008. -
