In mainland china today, the last three years of the war (1947-1949) is more commonly known as the war of liberation. -

In 1947 Britain could no longer afford to defend Greece. The idea of containment , limiting communism to the areas already under Soviet Union. The Truman Doctrine made it clear that Americans would resist Soviet expansion in Europe or some where else in the world. Germany became a huge focus in the Cold War. In 1949, the United States, Canada and ten other countries formed a new military. Members pledged to help one another if anyone of them were attacked. -

Korean was an independent kingdom until japan conquered it in early twentieth century. After Japan’s defeat in WWII, soviet and American forces agreed to divide Korea temporarily along the 38th parallel of latitude. North Korea was ruled by dictator Kim II Sung, became the communist ally of the soviets. South Korea a non-communist leader Syngman. -

South korean flagBoth leaders wanted to rule the entire country. In 1950, Kim II Sung called for “heroic Struggle” to reunite Korea. North Korean troops attack in June of that year and soon overran most of the South. The United State then organized a United Nations force to help South Korea. Although U.S troops arrived in early July, North Korean troops continued to advance until United Nations forces stopped them in August along the line known as the Pusan Perimeter. -

The Berlin Wall
In the 1950’s West Berlin became a show case for mans, unhappy with communism fled into West Berlin. When 1953 came, some 50,000 workers confronted the Soviet army in the streets of the German Capital. In 1961, the city split into democratic West Berlin and communist East Berlin. There was low-paid East Germans unhappy with the Communists who fled to West Berlin. In Berlin, the wall was completed with massive concrete barriers, topped with barb wire and patrolled by guards. -
