    The Compromise of 1850 was passed on January 29th, 1850 dealing with the controversial issue of slavery. Senator Henry Clay introduced the Compromise of 1850.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was written published in March 20th, 1852, because Harriet Beecher Stowe wanted to tell people about the harsh conditions slaves have to face.

    Kansas - Nebraska Act- passed
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed on May 30th, 1854. This Act had organized the territories of Nebraska and Kansas Act. Also outlawed slavery above the Louisiana Territory.
  • Dred Scott's decision

    Dred Scott's decision
    Dred Scott was a slave. He moved to free state territories with his owner and then eventually came back to a slave state. When he was in the free states he argued that he should be free. He took it to the Supreme Court but they had said if he isn't a citizen he can not bring up a case. Dred Scott had ended up still be a slave, but had made a huge movement on the Civil War.

    James Buchanan was the 15th president, serving immediately prior to the Civil War. He went in to office on April 23rd, 1857. He was born on April 23rd, 1791.
  • John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry

    John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry
    On October 16, 1859, John Brown led a group on a raid at Harpers Ferry. John Brown was trying to lead raid but they got caught and he was to be hung. This had also made a huge impact because it helped start the Civil War.

    Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States. He was elected on November 6th, 1860 He was the first republican to win the presidency.
  • South Carolina secedes from The Union

    Even though many thought that Lincolns election was fair, it was thought to have pushed the deep south towards secession. South Carolina was the first state to seceded from the Union on December 20th, 1860.

    Fort Sumter was in Confederate Territory. They were low on supplies so the messaged Lincoln and asked him to send some. Lincoln sent supplies to the fort, but before it got there troops attacked. Fort Sumter had surrendered.

    The Union had lost the battle and blamed it on General McDowell. He was replaced by General George McClellan. During one of the attacks, the troops of the Confederate General Thomas Jackson held their ground, eventually Jackson with gain the name "Stonewall."

    President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.The proclamation declared that all persons held as slaves.

    General Robert E. Lee rushed 25,000 soldiers to Gettysburg. The War was from July 1st to July 3rd 1863.The north had won but lost 23,000 soldiers. The Confederation lost 25,000 soldiers.

    Sherman's March to the Sea lasted from November 15th to December 21st. Union General William T. Sherman led 60,000 soldiers on a 285 mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia.

    On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his approximately 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

    A famous actor named John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln on April 14th, 1865. He was killed at Ford's theater, Washington, D.C. while watching a play.
