Tallmadge Amendment & The Missouri Compromise
The Tallmadge Amendment was brought by James Tallmadge Jr. to the United State's House of Representatives on February 13 1819 during the debate regarding the admission of Missouri as a state. Tallmadge hated slavery and sought to impose conditions on Missouri that would destroy slavery within a generation. -

Leaders of South Carolina brought forth the idea that they didn't have to follow federal laws. John C. Calhoun promoted the idea that state rights came above federal laws. -

In 1845 the USA annexed the Republic of Texas and put it in the union as the 28th state. -

Area that Mexico ceceded to America in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Would of banned slavery in any area we got from Mexico during the Mexican War. -
Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave Law
5 bills that brought peace to a 4 year confrontation between the slave states and the free states regarding the land aquired by the Mexican-American War. All runaway slaves were to be returned to their masters if caught. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
Anti-slavery book which provoked the masses against slavery and "helped lay the groundwork for the civil war." -
Kansas-Nebraska Act "Bleeding Kansas"
Created the territories Kansas and Nebraska. Settlers were allowed to choose if the territory allowed slavery or not. Was a border war about anti or pro slavery among settlers. -
Brooks/Sumner Affair
Brooks bashed Sumners head in with his wooden cane. This resutled in massive head trauma including post-tramatic stress disorder. -
Dred Scott Decision
A landmark decision by the US supreme court. It held that the federal government had no power to regulate slavery in the territories. -
Lincoln / Douglas Debates
A series of seven debates between Lincoln and Douglas. The main debate at hand was slavery. -
John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
Was an attempt by the white abolitionist John Brown to start an armed slave revolt. Seized a US arsenal at Harper's Ferry Virginia. -
Presidential Election
The 19th presidential election which Lincoln won. Before Lincoln was inauguration seven southern states seceded.
