    Heliocentric Theory Developed

    Heliocentric Theory Developed
    The Heliocentric Theory was developed by the Polish astronomer Nicholas Copernicus. The theory was proven correct after the previous theory (Geocentric Theory) was proven wrong. The theory states that all planets orbit the sun, different from the previous theory were all planets including the sun orbit the earth.

  • Milky Way Discovery

    Milky Way Discovery
    In 1609 Galileo Galilei, a Italian astronomer, used a telescope to further inspect the galaxies beyond planet earth. He then discovered the Milky Way, a spiral galaxy made up of dust, gas and stars.

  • Jupiter's Great Red Spot

    The Red Spot on Jupiter's surface is a storm. It is basically a hurricane. In this year the public became aware of this gigantic spot.

    In this year the USSR launched the first artificial satellite into space. They beat the United Sates and transmitted radio signals back to earth.

    In 1961 the first American reached space. His name was Alan B. Shepard. He became the first American who successfully launched into space and returned safely back down to earth.

    The first landing on the moon was not in fact the time that Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, it was the time that the Surveyor 1 landed on the moon. No people actually came into contact with the surface but the space craft definitely did.

    This part of the ISS was successfully launched from a proton rocket and started the beginning of the ISS.

    In Jan 2004 the exploration rover mission landed on Mars. This included two twin robots who were designed to investigate and to help astronomers expand their knowledge on planet Mars.

    In 2005 the first landing on Saturn's largest moon - Titan was accomplished.

    In 2005 the journey of a Deep Impact space probe completed it's mission by slamming into a comet known as Temple 1.

    The company known as SpaceX became the first private company on this date to launch a space craft into orbit and safely return it back down to planet earth.
