Missouri Compromise
An agreement passed in 1820 that said no slavery was allowed above the 33rd parallel, except for in the proposed state of Missouri. -

South Carolina declared that certain tarriffs were unjust and this created a large debate over states rights, where the south supported repealing the tarrifs and the North wanted the tarrifs. -

Mexican-American War
Mexico and the United States go to war over the border of Texas. The US would end up annexing much of Mexico's northern territory, causing a debate over whether slavery would be legal there. -
Wilmot Proviso
After the Mexican-American War, there was a date over whether the territories ceded by Mexico would have slavery. The Proviso was an attempt to prohibit slavery in these territories. It failed. -
Compromise of 1850
Compromise deisgned by Henry Clay that made Texas give up Western land claims, California was admitted as a pro-North state, Utah territory was organized. A strict fugitive slave law was established and slave trade was abolished in D.C. -
Republican Party founded
The Republican Party was founded specifically on an anti-slavery platform in 1854. When the first republican was elected president in 1860, the southern states felt threatened that he would end their culture and society. -
Nebraska-Kansas Act
This was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30. -
Dred Scott vs. Stanford
Supreme Court rules that the Federal Government cannot limit slavery in states and territories. That is left up to local governments. -

Abraham Lincon was elected president and was to represent the Northern states. Because of his anti-slavery views, his victory in the campaigns made the election very controversial and troubling to the Southern states.
