2100 BCE
The Bronze Age
The biggest industry in Qatar was the purple dye industry. People also fish for pearls and engage in trading pearls and dates palm. -
628 BCE
The spread of Islam
Muhammad sent a Muslim envoy to the ruler of the region of Bahrain. The envoy requested the ruler to join Islam. Eventually, the ruler said "yes". He also invited other regions and empires including Persia and Byzantium. -
Al Khalifa
A group of families called Al Khalifa migrated from Kuwait to Zubarah of Qatar. The Al Khalifa family gathered Arab tribes as their allies to take control of Bahrain from the Persians. -
Al Thani
The Al Thani family from the Tamim tribe went on a journey from Central Arabia to the Qatar peninsula. In 1825, the House of Thani was founded by Sheikh Mohhamed bin Thani. -
British protectorate
Following the Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate by signing a treaty in 1916. -
Independence and the State of Qatar
After World War I, Qatar gained independence from Britain and the State of Qatar was founded by Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammad bin Thani on September 3rd, 1971. The Al Thani dynasty continued to rule Qatar from 1971 until now. -
FIFA 2022 World Cup
In 2010, Qatar was selected to host FIFA World Cup in 2022. -
The new Emir
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani became the Emir of Qatar in 2013. He is also among the youngest current world sovereigns. -
World's Best Airline (2019 and 2021)
Qatar Airways won the World's Best Airline from Skytrax World Airline Award in 2019 and 2021. Qatar Airways was established in 1997.
