History of Pride now begins
In the year 1971, there was a meeting held at Hanlan's Point, a beach around Toronto Island Park. This meeting held 300 people who came from the "Toronto Gay Action". In August, it was the first gay rights protest, which demanded discrimination against gays and lesbians to come to an end. This took place in Ottawa and Vancouver. -

First Pride week
The first pride week took place in various Canadian cities, such as Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Pride week includes an art festival, dances, a picnic, and a small documentary which included the journey. The festivals during Pride week can also be called Pride Parade. This year was the year that homosexuality was removed from the "Diagnostics and Statistics Manual", since it was listed as a mental disorder. -
Gay Bars
The mayor of Quebec, Jean Drapeau, wanted to "clean up" this city, meaning he wanted to get rid of all gay bars. All of this was for the 1976 Summer Olympics and it resulted in many riots for this issue. -
First Canadian Cities
The two cities, Montreal and Vancouver, have officially become the first Canadian cities to host a Pride march, along with a festival. -
Canada's Fist Program
In order to fight anti-gay discrimination and violence, Canada created a program that prevented just that and was used throughout the Toronto District School Board. People took action and created this program after a hate crime about a man named Kenneth Zeller, being murdered in Toronto's High Park. -
Police raid The Sex Garage's After Party
Once they police raided the Sex Garages after party, they were fighting and arguing with the Montreal LGBTQ community for 36 hours. This act was brought by the policemen due to homophobia. -
Charter of Rights and Freedoms
Supreme Court of Canada added a rule in section 15 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It mentioned how everyone has a right to have equal protection, along with the equal benefit of laws without being discriminated. -
Bill C-23
The Liberals announced a bill, bill C-23, which stated that people in same-sex marriages that live together would have the exact same benefits as common-law couples. This law of bill C-23 will also allow same-sex couples to have the same social and tax benefits. -
Pride Flag Raised
For the first time in Canada's history, the Pride Flag was raised at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. -
38th Annual Pride Parade
The 38th annual Pride Parade was on June 24, 2018, at 2 pm and a moment of silence at 3 pm. There were 1 million people who attended this parade.
