French Society Divided/Financial Troubles
France was divided into 3 Estates. The 1st estate was made up of the clergy, which are the people of the church. The 2nd Estate was made of the nobility, which are the royals. The 3rd Estate was made of the bourgeisie and the peasants. The French monarch was in deficit for many years, and resulted in taxing only the 3rd Estate. -
Louis XIV calls the Estate General
King Louis called a meeting of the Estate General. Estates began preparing cahiers or grievance notebooks to take to the meeting. The 3rd Estate declared themselves as the National Assmbly and had a meeting that they would not give up until they reached all their goals. -
Parisians Storm the Bastille
The 3rd estates riot and begin breaking into the Bastille. The enter the Bastille because they are looking for guns and gunpowder. The rioters then capture the man who runs the Bastille and the kill him and put his head on a stick. After much fighting and killing the peasants began tearing down the Bastille by hand and taking it home with them. -
The National Assembly takes action
In late August the National Assembly began writing the declatration of the rights of man, which gave all men equal rights. The constitution insisted that governments exhist to protect the natural rights of their people. The constitution asserted freedom of religion and called for taxes to be levied accourding to pay. "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity"
The catholic church was placed under state control and the ended church involvment with the government. -
Womens March
Women marched from Paris to Versailles, which is 13 miles. Their goal was to get the kings attention and also they wanted to attack the queen, Marie ANtoinette. Once at the castle the ladies took the royal family back to Paris with them, where they were held for 3 years. -
Threats from Abroad
The king of Prussia and the emperor of Austria, issued the declaration of Plinitz. The two monarchs threatened to intervene to protect the french monarchy. The revolutionaries in France took it seriously and began preparing for war. -
Civil War (radicals take over)
The radicals fight for power and declare war. The 3rd estate broke into two groups; the Sans-Culottes and the Jacobins. -
Invading the Castle
In August of 1792 a mob stormed the royal castle killing many of the royal guards, the royal family managed to escape. A month later revolutionries raided a prison killing 1,200 prisoners. -
The French Republic
Radicals begin taking over and called for the election of a new legislative body called the national convention. It voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic. The convention later put Louis XVI on trial, he was found guilty and later executed. Months later his wife, Marie Antoinette, was put on trial and also executed. -

GuillotineThe reign of terror is a time period when the fear of being executed controlled all the people of France. Robespierre was the main instigator during this rain, He used the guillotine to execute anyone who had even a chance of questioning the revolution. -

Robespierre is arrested and then executed, in an act to end the reign of terror. -
The third stage
After the reign of terror people looked for someting else, that something being the convention. When the directory begain to weakin, the french people looked for someone else. Napoleon Bonaparte, a popular military hero, was put in a position to help the country when they were threatened. Bonaparte will though become emperor. -

Nationalism Spreads
Nationalism is a strong feeling of ones pride in and devotion to ones country or ethnicity. After the revolution many people began having a strong sence in ones national identidy. For the first time they actually had a government to look up to.
