First Italian Comes to Canada
Although he was travelling for England, John Cabot was the first Italian explorer to ever come to Canada. He left Europe in 1497, although the exact day he reached Canada is not known. -
Larger Groups Came For the First Time
Although John Cabot came to Canada in 1497, larger groups of Italians did not begin to come until around 1880. In 1881, a survey showed that there were almost 2 000 Canadians who admitted to having an Italian background -
Early 1900
Over 100 000 Canadians came over. They settled mostly in Toronto and Montreal, but smaller groups also settled in other places such as Vancouver, Windsor, and Hamilton, -
Laws
New laws were created in Canada around this time that limited the immigration of all Italians who wished to come to Canada. By the end of WWII, many of these laws had changed and Canada was willing to let Italians back in to the country. -
Period: to
World War II
The Second World War was one of the reasons that many Italians moved over, including my family. There was little future left for Italy after the war, as it had a devastating impact on the country. The official end date of the war was never officially agreed on. -
Grandpa Was Born
My Grandpa (or Nonno in Italian) was born on November 7, 1941. This birthday is also important to me for the same reasons as my Grandmother (I wouldn't exist without him). He came to Canada when he was 19, after my Grandmother did, but unlike her he came by himself, since some of his brothers were already here. He is the youngest of 7. -
Grandma Was Born
My Grandma (or Nonna in Italian) was born on December 13, 1945, right after the end of World War II. This is obviously significant to me because if she had not been born I would have never been born as well. She was born in Bovino, Italy, and was the second oldest child in her family. She had one older sister, two younger sisters, and a younger brother. -

Family Came to Canada
My Grandma and her family moved to Canada in April of 1959. The journey took them 15 days by boat, which was three days longer than planned, as the ship was blocked by ice as they travelled through the St. Lawrence River. It was the first trip that that boat had ever travelled to Canada. -

Mom Was Born
My mom was born on November 7, 1969. She has the same birthday as my Grandpa. Like I said before, her birth is important to me because she is my biologial mother (she gave birth to me). -
