After birth infants are responsive to voices and facial expressions of caregiver. -
3Months-4Months
During the first 3 months rituals and game playing have emerged such as, feeding, diaper changing, peekaboo, and patty cake (Owens,Pg.61,2015). -
6months to 10months
At 6 months infants learn the sound patterns of the native language, they have better speech perception, and at 8 to 10 months of age infants develop in interactions primarily through gestures (Owens,pg.61,2015). -
12 months
First word spoken. Words fill intentions previously signaled by gestures -
18Months-24Months
Children at 18month-24months begin combining words on the basis of word -order rules and could probably produce up 50 single words. -
2years
By age 2, a toddler has an expressive vocabulary of about 150 to 300 words and two-year-olds are starting to follow simple instructions. -
3 Years
At age 3 children begin to speak more adult-like sentences.Carries on a conversation using 2 to 3 sentences -
4Years
Begin to change style of talking to fit conversational partner.Four year old children can tell simple sequential stories usually about past events. -
5Years
By age five children acquire about ninety percent of adult syntax. -
Adolescence
Able to participate competently in conversations and telling of narratives. Knows multiple meanings of words and figurative language. Uses a gender style, or genderlect, when talking.
