Devolution- US/Great Britain
The British Empire had control over what is known as the United States of America. British gave up their power there for economic reasons. The people living in the U.S. wanted control over their own country and chose to fight in the Revolutionary War. The British were fighting against the Americans, and they later realized that all the losses in the war were not worth their rule over the U.S. They withdrew their troops and people from the country and the Americans received their independence. -
Supranationalism- Triple Alliance
From 1882 to the start of World War I in 1912, the Triple Alliance was started and stayed together. The countries in the alliance were Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The cause of this was because of political and military reasons. The goal of the countries joining together was to protect each other if any of the countries in the group were attacked. Also, to isolate France and to keep them from joining the Triple Entente. Despite their efforts, France had done so. -
Supranationalism- Triple Entene
In 1907, Britain, France, and Russia beame part of the the Triple Entene. This is an example of a politcal/military cause. This was before World War I had started and with this alliance, they agreed that they would not fight against each other in battle. Another reason for the pact between the Triple Entene was they all had a fear that as Germany was growing stronger, they would take over the world. They used the alliance between their countries to stop that from happening. -
Devolution- Ireland/Great Britain
The country now known as Ireland used to be under the British rule. Culture conflict arose because all of Ireland was Catholic, and their ruler was Protestant. In 1921 a treaty was signed by British and Irish representatives. 26 of the southern states were granted self rule, and six of the northern countries remained part of great Britain. The six countries that are still under the British government are known as Northern Ireland, while the 26 southern states are now known as Ireland today. -
Devloution- Germany
After WWII, Germany surrendered and was left to be governed by Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union. It was orginally separated into four parts, but because of the Cold War it ended with the East and the West. West Germany became a democracy and was controlled by the democractic West and the US. East Germany was communist and was controlled by the Soviet Union. A wall was constructed in 1961 to divide the country. It fell in 1989. This was caused by poitical reasons. -
Supranationalism- OPEC
OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) was founded in 1960. It started because of an economical cause. There are many countries involved, including the most of the Middle East, Nigeria, and Venezula. OPEC was founded to control the supply of oil, and to establish and control prices. Also, the unified countries of OPEC protect each other. -
Supranationalism- PLO
The PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) started because of cultural reasons. It involved the Palestinians, Israel, and Egypt. The Palestinians wanted independence from Israel. One of the main reasons for this was because they did not want to share land with the people of Israel, because of their different beliefs. They also wanted to protect their people. Israel needs their land for resources, so they did not grant the Palestinians independence, however they agreed on an autonomy. -
Devolution- Yugoslavia
At the end of WWI communist leader Tito became of the prime minister of Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. When he died in 1980, the state fell apart into 3 ethnic groups who were in major conflict: Serbs, Muslims, and Croats. Each country fought for freedom. Serbia and Montenegro were created. This is a political cause. -
Devolution- Czechoslovakia
Czechoslovakia was under communist rule. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the the people of Czechoslovakia overthrew their government. After, they remained a single country, but had conflict between the majority Czech and minority Slovak people. The countries split on the 1st of January, 1993. The reason for this separation was because of differences in culture. -
Supranationalism- NAFTA
On January 1st, 1994, NAFTA was established. The purpose of NAFTA was to remove trading barriers between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. This was started because of economic reasons. the countries wanted to be about to trade with each other, and they also wanted to become competitive with China, Japan, and the EU (European Union).
