In 1945 Jackie Robinson played his first season in the negro baseball league, He traveled all over the midwest on the Kansas CIty Monarchs.

Major League Baseball

May 19, 1945

Jackie Robinson joined the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League. On October 23 he signs a contract to play for the Montreal Royals, the top minor league team of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Branch Rickey, the Dodgers general manager, pays him a $3,500 bonus, plus $600 per month

Robinson retires from baseball. During his ten years with the Dodgers the team wins six pennants and one World Series.

Jackie is inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

Death

Jackie Robinson dies on October 24, at age 53. Rachel Robinson starts the Jackie Robinson Development Corporation, which specializes in building low-to-moderate-income housing.

Rachel Robinson creates the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which provides educational and leadership opportunities for minority students nationwide.

Scholarships

The Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships to 141 Jackie Robinson student Scholars, each year. The students attend more than 60 different colleges and universities nationwide. Over 3,000 requests for scholarships are received each year.
