After being kidnapped, the Aztecs wouldn't accept him as their leader, and killed him. The cause of death is unknown. -

Cortes takes the Aztec Empire.
With a band of only over 1000 to 3000 men, Cortes destroys the whole of the Aztec civilization, 5 million people strong.
There was a plague going around, their only leader was dead, and a rebellion was stirring up. Cortes comes in and destroys what little is left. -

After his wife died an untimely death, and many rulers sent to New Spain to assist got very ill, Cortes was assumed to be poisoning them. -
