The undeclared war against France was happening at this time, and the XYZ affair and Alien and Sedition Acts was taking place. (refer to event) -
XYZ Affair/Alien and Sedition Acts
This took place when John Adams was president. He forced any French person out of the country if he or she spoke out against him.(Alien and Sedition Acts.) The XYZ affair was an act that was taken when three French ambassadors told John Adams that they would not think about an alliance until he payed a large amount of money and apologized. He then printed in the paper that "XYZ" the ambassadors, had been rude, and made many crude remarks about France. -

Thomas Jefferson's Presidency
During this president's time in office, The Louisiana Purchase (refer to the event) took place, as well as the Embargo Act, which did not allow trade with other foreign countries. This was done to hurt the British. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase took place during President Jefferson's presidency. Lewis and Clark both went through and explored the land once it was bought from France. -

During James Madison's presidency, the War of 1812 was happening. He also ratified the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. -

James Monroe's Presidency
James Monroe was a part of the decision for the Missouri Compromise. This was when Missouri wanted to be a slave state, so in order to keep balance, the president and heads of the country decided that Missouri could be a slave state, and Maine would be a free state. He also instated the Monroe Doctrine. This basically told the other countries that he did not want to deal with their monarchy. Link text -

John Quincy Adams's Presidency
President Adams (the second) was president during the Indian removal act where the Native people were forced out of their homelands so settlers could move to the West. The Democratic Party was also created at this time. And finally, this was the time when his vice president John C. Calhoun was speaking out for state's rights. -

This president was president during the time of the Battle of New Orleans.
