    Pershing was awarded as General of the Armies during World War I, becoming the first and only six-star general to serve on active service in American history. While George Washington was also a six-star general, he didn't receive the honor until the 1976 U.S. bicentennial.

    The RMS Lusitania was an ocean liner with a UK registry, destroyed by an Imperial German Navy U-boat on May 7, 1915, 20 km off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland. After Germany announced it would begin engaging in unrestricted submarine warfare against British ships in response to the Allied powers' deployment of naval forces against it and the other Central Powers. The passengers had been warned about the dangers of sailing a British ship before departing New York.

    The battle was named after the French River Somme, where it occurred. The Allies planned to strike united, but the French were distracted by the Battle of Verdun, and the attackers were British. The first day of the Battle of the Somme has been reduced to a footnote in German and French history, compared to the massive casualties of 1914–1915 and the Battle of Verdun. This was the worst fight of WWI, especially from the standpoint of Britain.

    At age 85, Pershing married the French-Romanian portrait painter Micheline Resco in secret at his home at Walter Reed Hospital. Resco was 35 years younger than him. Pershing came to Paris in 1917 to take command of the troops, and the two fell in love and sent one another love letters for the next 30 years.
