~King and Parliament repealed after months of protest and boycotting
~An appeal by Ben Franklin was presented to the British House of Commons and the appeal was voted for -
The Townshend Act
~Also known as the Townshend duties
~Series of taxes that funded administration of the colonies
~Taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea
~Established a custom board in Boston to collect taxes -
Indemnity Act
~Exempted tea produced from the British East India Company from taxation, but when it was exported to the colonies, they still had to pay tax
~granted search warrants to British soldiers -
The Boston Massacre
~Crowd of Boston people were insulting and harassing British soldiers and the tension was slowly building up
~British soldiers got tired of the taunting, so they began to fire at the crowd
~They shot 5 people, killed one, and wounded 4
~Crispus Attucks was an African American sailor that died from the shooting -
Repeal of the Townshend Act
~Because of the massacre, and the colonies refusing to import British goods, the Townshend Act was partially repealed
~Trade went down, and the British lost a lot of money
~After Townshend died, he was replaced by Lord North who got rid of the act, but kept the tax on tea -
Tea Act
~The British East India Company was going bankrupt, and in effort to save the enterprise, the parliament passed the act
~Granted the right for the company to ship their tea directly into the colonies without having to land in England first and did not have to pay duties
~Protestors did not like that at all so they would drink smuggled Dutch tea -
The Boston Tea Party
~The colonies were boycotting the tea arriving at the ports and unloading
~The tea could not be unloaded and would sit in the boats and rot
~December 16 was when the sons of liberty had an idea to dress up as Mohawks and dump a million dollars' worth of tea into the harbor -
The Coercive Acts
~In response to the Boston Tea Party, the British government decided that they had to get the colonists in Massachusetts under control
~Parliament passed the Coercive Acts, which closed Boston Harbor until restitution was paid for the dumped tea
