Triple Entente
Formed by Britain, France, and Russia, the Triple Entente was created for political and militarial reasons. Such reasons including the desire to stop Germany from taking over Europe.
The Entente ensured the three countries that none of the countries involved in the agreement would fight or attack any of the others; it did not, however, state that the countries had to fight along side each other. SUPRANATIONALIST -
United Nations
The United Nations was formed for political purposes by the US and the Soviet Union, and included 48 other international countries, (including Britain, France, Germany, and China). The intention of the group was to protect its members from agression. SUPRANATIONALIST -
Warsaw Pact
An organization created by Germany, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Albania, Romania, and Bulgaria, and was created for military and political reasons. The creation of the Warsaw Pact was in response to NATO, which the member countries viewed as a threat. SUPRANATIONALISM -
European Union
In response to a successful economic cooperation in Europe in 1951, the European Union was formed six years later and consisted of many European countries over time and has been known by such name since 1992 (origional name: European Economic Community). The purpose of this group was to help devise integration policies that would help with issues created, and also to help balance out power. Countries involved in this group include Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Britain, Germany, and Sweden. -
OPEC
OPEC stands for Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Created for economical reasons, OPEC is responsible for regulating the prices of oil exports in areas in North East Africa and the Middle East, as well as in Venezuela. SUPRANATIONALISM -
Islamic Conference Organization (ICO)
ICO was formed because of criminal arson against a Mosque in Jerusalem in 1969. Many countries are members, including Indonesia, Iran, Uganda, Pakistan, Benin, and more. The purpose of the creation of the Organization is to help defend the Muslim religion, and to service Islamic people in non-islamic countries. SUPRANATIONALISM -
Yugoslavia
Because of the spread of communism, many of the countries in Yugoslavia broke up (due to policial reasons). The countries created kept the same ethnic groups as Yugoslavia, and became the modern countries of Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzogavina, Croatia, MAcedonia, and Slovenia. DEVOLUTION -
Soviet Union
The Soviet Union wasn't very smart with how they managed their money, and so they fell apart and went back to being called Russia. DEVOLUTION -
United Kingdom and Scotland
For economical reasons, Scotland wanted to break away from the United Kingdom, in such a way that they would be more valuable in the European Union (because of their access to massive amounts of oil in the North Sea). The only thing Scotland has gained, however, is autonomy. -
PLO
PLO stands for Palestinian Liberation Organization, and it only contains regions from the Middle East (the Gaza Strip, Golan Heights, and West Bank). The purpose PLO was created in an attempt to create a country for the Palestinians, but so far the only thing gained has been autonomy. SUPRANATIONALISM
