Life in china was hard, most of the people were extreamly poor, and peasants were forced to paid taxes to maintain the imperial court. Additionally, they faced starvation and droughts.
There were not enought food, and there was more unemployment due to western influences.
China was humiliated and exploited by European Imperialist powers. -
Sino-Japanese War
A war between China and Japan for the control of Korea.
Japan won, which resulted in the humiliation of China, the independence of Korea, lost of territories such as Taiwan and an agreement to pay a large indemnity and give traiding privileges to Japan.
Moreover, it resulted in more demands from the European powers that made worst the situation of China. -

Overthrow of the Qing dynasty and creation of the Chinese Republic. -

Yuan Shikai's Rule
After the overthrown of the Qing dinasty, the general Yuan Shikai became a military dictator, who centralized all the power and later a self-proclaim Emperor of China. He didn't solve any issue that were affecting China. He lost support of the military after became Emperor.
He abdicated and died three months later. -

WARLORD-ERA
During Shikai's goverment, many generals became military governors of the provinces.
After the dead of Shikai, they became warlords and used their armies to enforce their authority, and fought each other for control of China. -
May Fourth Movement
It was a students's mass demostration in Beijing against the warlords, the traditional Chinese culture and the Japanese.
It wanted a change & rebirth of China as a proud independent Nation.
It led to the creation of the Chinese Communist Party. -

FIRST UNITED FRONT
The GMD and the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) formed the First United Front, a Military Movement aided by the URSS, in order to get rid of the warlords and the foreing imperialist powers.
They seek to unite China. -
Dead of Sun Yixian
Sun Yixian was the head of the GMD (Guamingdong party), the first provisional president. He created the three principles that guide his party.
After his dead, the GMD had made little progress.
General Jiang Jieshi became the leader of the GMD. -
"Purification" Movement
Jiang Jieshi was an anti-communist but tolerate the CCP, in order to end with the Warlords.
GMD expelled all communist from the party.
Jiang Jieshi order the massacre of communist, most notable the Shanghai and Guangzhou massacre. -
GMD attacks the CCP
Jiang Jieshi takes control of Beiging, declares China now united.
Ideology divided GMD & CCP, Jieng Jieshi turn against the CCP.
The Civil War starts.
