China Resists Foreign Influence
China looked down on all foreigners. In 1793, the Qing emperor agreed to receive an ambassador from England. The Englishman brought gifts of the West. Emperor was not impressed. Said they were not interested in the "strange objects" and gadgets that the West was offering them. -

A clash betweenBritish and the Chinese. The battles took place mostly at sea. Britain won because of their steam powered gunboats and sophisticated cannons. In 1842 they signed a peace treaty, called the Treaty of Nanjing. -

The Taiping Rebellion
Led by Hong xiuquan. Influenced by missionaries. Hong wanted to save China and dreamed of a "Heavenly Kingdom of Great Pecae." Army made up of mostly peasants. In 1853 Hong captured the city of Nanjing and declared it his capital.
