Vietnam was a small land in Southeast Asia. The conflict started when France took Vietnam and ruled it for 100 years. French rule was destroyed when japan took Vietnam. Once their independence was declared many saw the defeat as an opportunity. Ho chi minh organized revolt and asked Americans to help him. The Americans really didn't think it was a good idea because ho chi was communist. -
Eisenhower cities the Domino Theory

Eisenhower thought of the domino theory as if one country gives into communism then all neighboring countries would also fall. China and the soviet union had both fllen to communism which he felt as if it was a threat to world piece. -

The French didn’t believe in the Vietnam independence. Fighting between the French and the Vietminh occurred for about 8 years. The U.S. gave them large amount of money.. The turning point occurred in 1954 when the French were forced to surrender. After the war the French and Vietnam negotiated a settlement. -

President Diem was mad at the south Vietnamese and started imprisoning people who criticized his polices. He ran a very corrupt government with selected officials. He ordered a crack down of all his opponents in august of 1963. With that he lost all support of American forces and government and was assassinated. -

Vietcong were English Vietnamese communist. They fought against the south Vietnamese and the united states military. The Vietcong name was first used by the south Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem belittle the rebels. They became the National Liberation Front in the year of 1960. -
U.S. military begins using agent orange
Agent Orange
Agent orange is mixture of chemicals used in the Vietnam war to exterminate vegetation in the why of the united states soldiers, but also hurt a lot of soldiers as well. The Unite States dropped over a million gallons of agent orange and covered about 4.5 million acres of land throughout the war in Vietnam. -

The gulf of Tonkin was the first naval battle between the United States and the north Vietnamese. The united states had to take action and take out North Vietnamese naval ships. They sunk about 30 ships of and destroyed a oil storage. They were shot at by enemy ships but only one torpedo landed but didn’t appose a threat. -

In the first months of the year 1965, the united states president ordered a deployment of united states ground forces to South Vietnam. The deployment of 3,500 marines to the soil of Vietnam was a result of the Gulf of Tonkin crisis. There were a total of 8,440,000 American soldiers deployed into Vietnam throughout the war. -

Operation Rolling thunderOperation rolling thunder was a strategic military aircraft attack on certain targets throughout north Vietnam. It occurred in October of 1968. the bombardment supposed to pressure on the north Vietnamese communist leader. They tried to cut down their want to wage war on the united states. This was the first American aerial attack against the north Vietnamese and showed the American involvement in the Vietnam war. -
Tet Offesive

Due to united states intelligence failure the Tet offense was the turning point of the Vietnam war. That day was a holiday for Vietnamese and the south Vietnamese were sent home. the north vietnames attacked multiple governemnt building including the united states embassy in vietnam. -

VietnamizationVietnamization that ended American involvement in the Vietnam war. This policy put all military responsibilities on the south Vietnamese. So that the united states could end involvement in the Vietnam war. They built up the south Vietnamese so they were capable to defend their selves. -

A national guardsmen shot down 4 students and injured 9 others at the university. The students were protesting on war. The guardsmen shot 67 rounds in 30 seconds. They were protesting on attacks on Cambodia. -

The Watergate scandal involved 5 men of the republican party getting arrested by officials. They were trying to break into the a democratic office to spy on the democrats. Carter gave them hush money so the men wouldn't say anything. -

And so the War in Vietnam comes to an end for American troops. In 1973 Uitted states troops were withdrawn from Vietnam. only 7,000 U.S. civilians stayed for aid but everyone else came back to the U.S.
