Darwin initially doesn't enjoy the island, but he eventually finds fossils full of two-shelled animals (brachiopods). -

Darwin explores the lowland areas with the natives. -
Chiloé Island, Chile
Darwin witnesses Mount Osorno erupt and experiences an earthquake. He believes that the earthquake has done more in degrading the size of the island than 100 years of ordinary wear and tear. -
Galapagos Islands
Darwin finds that the many species of plants, birds, and tortoises are all unique to the different Galapagos Islands. He investigates the different species and finds that the variations correspond to the islands. When he returns to London, he discovers that the group of Galápagos specimens he had thought were seperate bird species were actually all finches. -
Sydney, Australia
Darwin finds and marvels at the completely different set of mammals in Australia. -
Cocos Islands (Keeling Islands)
Darwin studies coral reefs around the islands to test his theory of atoll formation. -
Bahia and Pernambuco, South America
In the jungles of South America, Darwin is intrigued by many incredible creatures but he is also homesick and seasick. -
Charles Darwin Returns to England
Darwin returns to Falmouth, England in early October, 1836.
