The First Fleet
The British governors set up the first penal colony in botany bay to lock up the convicts of England. This colony became the first settlement of NSW. -
New Holland became Western Australia
Janszoon was followed by Dirk Hartog in 1616 and Abel Tasman in 1642 and 1644. The Dutch named the west coast of Australia New Holland, but New Holland was then named Western Australia by the NSW governors -
There is now South Australia
South Australia was established as a free colony in 1836. It was taken from the southern part of New South Wales. Kangaroo Island and other islands were included. -
There is now North Australia
The colony of North Australia was created with its main settlement at Port Curtis. This settlement failed after six months
and the new colony was officially reincorporated into New South Wales.
