Proclamation of 1763
A proclamation claiming that the colonists can not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains which the colonies ignored. -
Sugar Act
The British halved the tax on molasses not made from Britain to try to cease colonial smuggling which the colonies ignored. -
Stamp Act
They had the colonists pay a tax with a purchase of every legal documents, newspapers, pamphlet, cards, etc. The colonists were outraged and harassed British workers. They also had delegates from 9 colonies meet to repeal the act. -
Repeal of Stamp Act
The British repealed the act but had the Declaratory Act be enacted on the same day. -
Boston Massacre
A mob of American colonists stood at the British Customs house and harassed British officers which led to 5 colonists shot. Samuel Adams and other activists saw this as this a British attack on defenseless citizens and dubbed it the "Boston Massacre". -
Boston Tea Party
British parliament had colonists pay a tax on tea where the colonists revolted to it by disguising themselves as Native Americans and throwing 18,000 pounds of tea into Boston Harbor. -
Intolerable Acts
Parliament passed the Intolerable Act in response to the Boston Tea Party. The act closed down Boston Harbor, allowed British soldiers to live in private homes with empty rooms, appointed Thomas Gage as the new governor of Massachusetts and put Boston under Marshall Law. The colonists created the First Continental Congress, created a Declaration of Colonial Rights and said that colonists should retaliate if British officers used force against them. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
The beginning of the war. The Americas ended in British retreat. -
Battle of Saratoga
The British tried to cut New England from the other colonies by attacking it from three different sides. Considered the turning point of the war. It results in the French joining the colony's side. -
Battle of Yorktown
The British forces are defeated by French and American troops as the last major battle of the war. -
Signing of the Treaty of Paris
After the signing of the Treaty of Paris, America is deemed independent from Great Britain and they are able to expand to the Mississippi River
