Jamestown is the first permanent English settlement. Jamestown is located in Virginia on the west bank of the James river. -
Virginia House of Burgesses
The Virgina House of Burgesses was the first representative government for the New World. This type of government was created so colonists could make their own laws. -
Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 English colonist on the Mayflower ship on their way to Plymouth. The Mayflower Compact was created in order to prevent dissent amongst Puritans and non-separatist Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth. -
Bacon's Rebellion
The Bacon Rebellion was a rebellion against Nathaniel Bacon and William Berkeley. The immediate cause of the rebellion was Governor Berkeley's refusal to take action against the Native American attacks on frontier settlements. The other grievences in the colonies only amplified the rebellion. The rebellion had many casulties including men, women, and children. -
Salem Witch Trials
The Salem Witch Trials were hearing of people being prosecuted for being involved in witchcraft. These trials were held in Massachusetts. There were 20 people killed in these trials, most were women. -
Trial of John Peter Zenger
John Peter Zenger was a famous writer. He voiced his critical opinions about William Cosby, a colonial governor, in The New York Weekly Journal. After writing this about the governor, the governor had him arrested for libel. His lawyers successfully argued that truth is is a defense against charges of libel. -
French and Indian War
Also know as the Seven Years War. This war was fought between the colonist of British colonists and New France. Each side was fully supported by their parent countries, Britian and France. Fought for territorial reasons. -
Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George III. He declared that settlers could not settle past the line drawn at the Applachian Mountains. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act of 1765 was a direct taxation from the Parliament of Great Britian. This Act required that many printed material be printed on stamp paper that was produced in London. Material included documents, magezines, playing cards, newspapers, etc. -
Quartering Act
The Quartering Act required colonists to provide the British soldiers with any needed accomodations or housing. Parliament ordered these acts on the American colonies. -
Declaratory Act
This Act was passed when the Stamp Act was repealed. This Act enforced that Parliament's authority was the same in America as it was in Britian. -
Boston Massacre
British soldiers kill five male civilians and injured six on King Street. Patriots were protesting against the British troops being in their city and for the taxation on the colonies. -
Boston Tea Party
A group of colonist protest against the thirteen years of British oppression. The colonists attack British ships in the Boston harbor. The British closed the harbor and inflicted harsher penalties for their retaliation. -
Tea Act
The act that sparked the revolutionary movement. This act was imposed on Boston to raise revenue in the colonies instead of enforce new taxes. -
1st Continental Congress
This was the first session of the continential congress held in Philiadelphia. Every colony sent a delegate but Georgia. These delegates drafted a independece of rights and grievances. -
2nd Continental Congress
The thirteen delegates met in Philiadelphia soon after the American Revolutionary War in the summer of 1775. This Continental Congress exceeded the First Continental Congress and adopted the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. -
Declaration of Independence
The day that the Thirteen Colonies declared it's independence from Great Britian. This document made the Thirteen Colonies the United States of America and independent sovereign states.
