My Birthday
My name is Carmen. I was born and raised in London, England. I am an only child. My mother died of disease when I was three years of age. Because of her death, my father was terribly grief-stricken. He killed himself when I was eighteen. I decided to start a new life. I moved to America. I am writing this so future Americans will know what life was like in these times. -
Entering America
I enter America by steamship. I go through a health inspection and I wait long hours to speak with a government official. I move into an apartment with two other immigrants. They become my friends and we work in the same clothes factory.
