3/5 Compromise
This was a compromise between the southern and Nothern States which made it so that every five slave would count as three people. So that the south could have more power in congress and the north would get tax money. This was a start in the seperation of the country, because it was the first timme it was ether north or south not the whole country. -
Eli Whitney and the cotton gin
It was a machine that made it easier to pick the seeds out of the cotton so it made it easier to make more cotton and it was cheaper to buy. So people could own more shorts and have different colors like blue or red. Also it gave the North an issue to bring up why does the sout need as mamy slaves now. They don't need slaves to work on taking the seeds out all they need them for now is the feilds. They can us people in factors to refine it and make shirts. -
Missouri Comprise
It was a bill that was set down for the states that any state above the 36'30' line would be free. Anything below the line would be a slave state plus the made Maine a state. Plus Missuri was a loud to have slaves. This bill was made up to try to stop the tenstions between the north and the south, but it actual made things worse. Now they are going to start fighting over what states to make part of each and who has more power. -
Jackson and Nullification
Jackson had just put out a new law that was taxing exporting goods so it was hurting the souths cotton business. So Jackson's VP made up a thing called nullification which ment that if a state didn't like a law they didn't have to follow it. Plus they where put in the USA willingly than they can leave when they want. So Jackson made a new power it is called Marshal Law which is when you send in troops to make the state complie with you. So this is what Lincoln used to start the civil war. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This was passed by congress and it was a law that people would hate, because if you where a free slave they could say you where a run away and no one would no if you weren't one. This made the Norhtern states made, because people where just taking random black people and saying they where slaves and getting away with it. -
Bleeding Kansas
It was that there was a bill passed that said that it was up to the state to decide if it wants slaves or not so both northerns and southerns moved there. So they start a small war against each other there that didn't end till 1860. It became a free state and so the south was mad, because lots of the northerns moved back to the north. They where also mad, because rich northerners would by land and give it to northern people to farm in kansas. -
Ostend Manifesto
It was a document that stated that we needed to have cuba. Ether we would buy it from spain or we would us force. People in the south really wanted it for sugar cane plantations and more power. The document said that we need it for national security and that we need it before France or Great Britian can get it. This was stopped from happening, because the president thought thatthe same thing would happen that happened in Kansas.
