  • Linux kernel was released.

    Linux kernel was created by Linus Torvalds and it started making it's first appearances on early versions of what would later become the internet in 1991. It was one of the first open-source programs created this way and is now one of the most popular open-source programs in the world.
  • AOL for Windows was released.

    In 1991, America Online was released on Windows. Like many things about the internet, America Online's history runs deep and there are too many people and organizations involved in its creation to be listed but the product itself connected people all over the country, being one of the first commercially available products that could connect people to the internet in a user friendly manner.
  • Java programming language is released.

    Developed by James Gosling and his team at Sun Microsystems, Java was designed to be a platform-independent programming language. Written with the idea that you can write a program once and run it anywhere.
  • USB was released.

    In 1996 the USB (universal serial bus) was introduced to simplify the connection of devuces to computers. Developed by a group of companies including Intel, Compaq, and Microsoft, USB replaced various legacy ports and simplified the plug-and-play experience.
  • Bluetooth becomes a thing.

    Released in 1999 by Ericsson Mobile, it was under development for almost ten years as short-link radio technology before being showcased as a hands free mobile headset.
